Why More Men Than Women Hold Osteoporosis?

Why More Men Than Women Hold Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis can affect anyone and indeed both men and women. But a higher female ratio than men. What are the causes of male osteoporosis are more resistant than women?

Statistics show that 1 in 3 women over the age of 50 years will suffer a fracture due to osteoporosis, while in men the ratio was 1 of 8 men.

When osteoporosis bones become weak and easily broken due to missing density. But the loss of bone density is different between men and women.

There are several factors that influence the ability of men to be more resistant to osteoporosis than women, as quoted from the LIVESTRONG, Saturday (03/12/2011), namely:

1. Men do not experience the hormonal changes such as women
Within 5-7 years after menopause women will experience hormonal changes such as reduced estrogen levels that cause loss of bone mass with high speed. Because men do not experience the hormonal changes they do not lose bone density as quickly as women.

2. Men have larger skeletons
Additional factors that make men more resistant to osteoporosis is the size. The man known to have a larger skeleton that takes much longer to develop low bone density or osteopenia.

3. More rapid accumulation of bone mass in men
Most males reached peak bone mass is greater than the female. Accumulation of bone mass in men who happen faster and sooner it can reduce your risk of osteoporosis.

Still does not mean men free from osteoporosis, only slightly lower risk than women. To improve health and prevent loss of bone density can be achieved through proper diet and increasing physical activity, especially weight training.
